Landscape Watering

Each water purveyor is responsible for developing watering restrictions that apply to its jurisdiction. For the purpose of enforcement, watering days and/or schedules may be prescribed based upon the address of the customer's home or facility.

Watering:
Landscape irrigation must adhere to mandatory watering schedules for sprinklers and drip irrigation. Schedules are determined by watering groups.

Member agencies may provide a three-year exemption to customers using smart controllers.

Be sure to check your local turf limits before planting new landscapes.

Additional Watering Restrictions or Exceptions

  • Drip watering is permitted any day of the week. However, the number of days per week cannot exceed the number of days allowed for sprinkler watering.

  • Assigned watering groups are mandatory for all customers. Using sprinklers on days other than those assigned to you is considered water waste and may result in a water-waste fee or citation.

  • From May 1 until Oct. 1 , time-of-day watering restrictions prohibit mid-day watering from
    11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Exceptions to both time-of-day and assigned group watering restrictions are hand watering and supervised testing of your sprinkler system. Additional watering of new or reseeded landscapes is allowed for 30 days after planting from September through April. Contact your water provider to arrange for an exemption.

  • Sundays are not an optional watering day in winter, spring and fall.

  • Public and private community-use recreational turf areas are allowed twice weekly waterings from November through February.

  • Golf courses are required to comply with water budgeting policies in lieu of specific watering schedules.

  • Commercial and residential properties using smart controllers may receive a three-year watering schedule exemption from member agencies. While time of day restrictions still apply, eligible customers would be exempt from the mandatory watering schedule.
