SNWA launches edgy ad campaign to increase compliance with mandatory watering schedule

Southern Nevada's regional water management agency is launching a new advertising campaign designed to take residents to a place that is, for some, uncharted territory—the irrigation clock.

Taking a visually arresting, comedy-based creative approach, the two television spots respectively feature a small white Bichon Frisè dog and an elderly woman not-so-gently reminding a homeowner to change his irrigation clock. The commercials culminate with the reminder, "Don't make us ask you again." The new spots were conceived by R&R Partners, the marketing agency that created Las Vegas' nationally renowned "What happens here, stays here" advertising campaign.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) estimates that significantly improving compliance with its mandatory watering schedule—which assigns water users to specific irrigation days—could save more than 1.5 billion gallons of water per year.

The SNWA oversees one of the country's most successful water efficiency programs, which includes the watering restrictions, the innovative Water Smart Home partnership with homebuilders, and the Water Smart Landscapes incentive program, which pays customers to replace grass with water-efficient landscaping. That program has resulted in the removal of more than 70 million square feet of grass since 1999, saving the community more than 4 billion gallons of water per year.
