Barium

Barium is used in making a wide variety of electronic components, metal alloys, bleaches, dyes, fireworks, ceramics and glass. In particular, it's used in well drilling operations where it's released directly into the ground.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for barium at 2,000 parts per billion (ppb). Our water supply contains substantially less than this maximum.

Short-term barium exposure above the MCL could result in gastrointestinal disturbances and muscular weakness. Long-term barium exposure above the MCL could result in high blood pressure.

For more information, go to the EPA's fact sheet on barium.
