The Southern Nevada Water Authority has two major water
treatment facilities: the Alfred Merritt Smith Water Treatment Facility and the River Mountains Water Treatment Facility.
Built in 1971, the Alfred Merritt Smith Water Treatment Facility currently treats most of the valley's drinking water. Recent improvements to the facility increased the plant's reliability and capacity. The facility can treat up to 600 million gallons a day (mgd).
The addition of ozone treatment in 2003 put the facility on the cutting-edge of water treatment technology. Ozonation is one of the best water treatment technologies in the world.

The River Mountains Facility treats up to 300 million gallons of water per day. It's one of many projects in the Water Authority's Capital Improvements Program that increases the reliability of our water supply.
The facility was designed so it can expand to meet Southern Nevada's needs. In the future, the River Mountains facility will be able to treat up to 600 million gallons of water a day.
The River Mountains facility provides additional reliability and capacity to Southern Nevada's municipal water treatment and distribution capabilities. It began delivering treated water in October 2002.
The facility uses both ozone and chlorine in the disinfection process.
