Conservation

Promoting the efficient use of water is central to the mission of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). The ability to increase efficient water use and reduce water waste wherever possible has a direct impact on the amount of resources that will be needed in the future.

Conservation is a resource, but it is fundamentally different from other resources available in the SNWA portfolio.

Unlike typical "wet" resources, which are acquired to meet demands, conservation is used to reduce overall demands and extend supplies. The more successful a community's conservation achievements become, the lower the community's overall demand for water and the more efficient its use of existing supplies.

While SNWA promotes indoor conservation, curbing outdoor water use provides the greatest opportunity for water conservation in Southern Nevada.

SNWA Conservation Programs

Conserving water is one of the best methods to protect our water resources. SNWA offers several conservation programs to help the community conserve. Southern Nevada's annual water consumption decreased by nearly 26 billion gallons between 2002 and 2009, despite a population increase of 400,000 during that span and approximately 40 million annual visitors. The current conservation goal is 199 gallons per capita per day by 2035.
