Grey Desert Spoon, Desert Spoon, Sotol, Spoon Yucca
Dasylirion wheeleri

This is an accent plant that blends well with other desert plants. Forms a dense rosette of leathery, blue-gray to blue-green, strap-like leaves with spiny leaf margins. A long woody stalk holds the cream to green-white catkin flowers well above the foliage. The bloom stalk can reach up to 15 feet tall. It can be easily removed if its appearance is undesirable. May not bloom every year. Eventually develops a trunk. Requires minimal maintenance. Dead leaves can be left in place providing a shaggy looking trunk or removed which gives it a pineapple like appearance. Remove caught debris as necessary. Do not plant near walkways, the spines will grab clothing and skin. Give it plenty of room to reach its full size. Too often planted within a foot or two of a driveway, roadway, or walkway and as it matures, one side must be sheared off--this is very unattractive. Thrives in full sun, but will accept some shade. Needs little water once established; watering the crown can cause rot.
