Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974 and has amended it several times. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) writes the regulations to carry out the provisions of the act, which is administered through the State of Nevada.

The purpose of the Safe Drinking Water Act is to make sure that the drinking water supplied to the public is safe. The EPA sets national drinking water standards that water system providers must follow.

Southern Nevada's municipal water supply meets or surpasses all federal Safe Drinking Water Act standards.
