Sented Penstemon, Palmer's Beardtongue, Palmer's Penstemon, Palmer Penstemon
Penstemon palmeri
Southwestern native. Mojave Desert native. Long flower-baring stems growing up from a low rosette of leaves at the base. One of the taller penstemons. Leaves gray-green to blue-green, triangular-shaped, with toothed margins. Leaves along stems are fused at the base creating a skirt effect. Pink to pink-white tubular flowers with dark pink stripes (nectar guides) coming out of the throat. One of the few scented penstemons. Bees love the flowers and the seeds are a food source for birds. Can be short-lived but may self-sow in the landscape. Cut stems off at the base after flowers spent or after seeds sown.
