Pomegranate
Punica granatum

Climate Resiliency 3 out of 5 stars

Dense, fountaining, vase to rounded shape. Sharp-tipped branches. Glossy, narrowly elliptical, medium to deep green leaves with strong veining. Blooms at the branch tips. Red-orange trumpet-shaped flowers with ruffled petals. Leathery-skinned fruit is red to yellow-green depending on the variety. Fruit is edible. Seeds are a food source for birds. Overwatering increases fruit's tendency to split open. Fruit is susceptible to leaf-footed plant bug and internal black rot. Prune in late winter for shape and to thin the interior twiggy growth. Shearing reduces flowering and fruiting. Several varieties, but the best known is 'Wonderful'.
