Mealy Cup Sage, Texas Violet Sage, Mealy-Cup Sage
Salvia farinacea
Southwestern native. Upright to sprawling habit. Lance-shaped, 2 to 4 inches long, bright green to gray-green leaves with wavy to serrated margins. Smooth above and wooly below. Aromatic. Dense growing spikes of tubular flowers with a prominent 'lower' lip. Color ranges from white through blue to dark violet depending on the cultivar. Calyxes are woolly white, often with a blue to purple tint. Trim off spent flower stalks to encourage continued blooming. Dies to the ground in winter, but generally comes back from the roots. Prune back to 2 to 4 inches above the ground in winter or early spring. Has several cultivars--the most common in our area are 'Texas Violet'" and 'Victoria Blue'. Cultivars will vary in flower color and mature size. Member of the mint family.
