Autumn Sage, Gregg's Sage, Texas Sage
Salvia greggii

Southwestern native. Rounded, mounding habit. Small, oval, medium green leaves with smooth margins. Leaves are aromatic and have a slightly sticky coating. Short terminal stems hold clusters of tubular flowers with a prominent 'lower' lip. Cultivars abound with a multitude of flower colors, primarily white and various shades of red and pink. Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Trim off spent flower stalks to encourage continued blooming. Tends to die back partially in winter in our area. May die to the ground in severe cold, but usually comes back from the roots. Prune out dead and to shorten and shape in late winter or early spring. Does best with amended soils and some afternoon shade in the low desert. Some varieties sold as Autumn Sage or Salvia greggii types have flower colors including shades of orange, yellow, blue, and purple. These are usually actually hybrid crosses of S. greggii with other salvias and may have slightly different characteristics. Member of the mint family.
